Recently, you may have seen people on social media adding MCT to their smoothies, coffee, or other daily food items - what exactly is MCT, and what are its benefits?

What is MCT

“MCT” stands for medium-chain triglycerides and has been called a super fuel since our bodies absorb MCTs more rapidly than LCTs (long-chain triglycerides). It is a type of fatty acid derived from coconut oil that can be more easily digested and converted into energy compared to other fats, helping you feel fuller longer. MCT moves through your body by going from the gut directly to the liver and then converts to energy without relying on bile to break down like longer-chain fats do.

Different Types of MCTs

The MCT that you are consuming can be a mixture of one or more of the following:

  • (C6: six carbons) Caproic Acid, or Hexanoic acid
  • (C8: 8 carbons) Caprylic Acid, or Octanoic acid
  • (C10: 10 carbons) Capric Acid, or Decanoic acid
  • (C12: 12 carbons) Lauric Acid, or Dodecanoic acid

MCT is something that we should all consider adding to our daily diet because of the amazing benefits it has to offer.

MCT Oil Benefits
Having MCT in your go-to snacks or meals is an easy way to reap the benefits of smart fats. Smart fats help with things such as:

Increasing Your Brain Power
Have you ever felt completely deplete of energy in your body or gone through an uncomfortable period of brain fog? I know I have. MCT is something that our metabolic systems can quickly turn into fuel when our bodies are low on energy, essentially acting as a natural, instant brain booster. It’s almost as if someone flips a switch in your brain and all of a sudden a rush of clarity comes through!

Prolonging Satiation
MCTs are unique saturated fats that support your immune system with their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. They help you feel full for more extended periods of time and help prevent you from over-snacking. According to multiple studies, they are the easiest type of fatty acid that your body can burn for calories. The study states that MCTs affect your hormones, which includes your appetite-controlling hormones that help your body feel full. Since it has an impact on body fat reduction, when you add it as part of a healthy, balanced diet, it may help you with losing weight or maintaining a healthy weight.

Supporting Your Gut
Is your gut health something that you take seriously? It can be easy for us to forget about taking care of the inside of our bodies when we're so focused on maintaining the outside. We should all be caring for our guts as we care for our hair, clothes, skin, nails, muscles, etc. Research shows that having MCTs in our digestive tract helps our gut be more selective on what it lets pass through it, such as blocking unhealthy toxins and bacteria from the bloodstream

Boosting Your Workouts
MCT has become extremely popular amongst the fitness community over the last 10 years. It is something that helps people who are looking to build muscle and lose fat. A heavy meal after a workout is not everyone's first choice, but it’s important to eat nutritious food after a workout to see results, and that’s where MCT can play a big role. It can help prevent muscle breakdown, improve protein synthesis, and reduce your body’s recovery time

Enhancing Keto Diets
Ketones are your body’s primary energy source when on a ketogenic diet. Ketones break down fats and transfer them to energy when there is low carbohydrate intake. Because we know that MCTs are the most efficiently digested saturated fat, we know that they would work exceptionally well in supporting this low carb, and high saturated fat diet.
